How Will The Current CPU Shortage Affect You?

Hey there! Just to let you know, there is currently a CPU shortage that is affecting hardware delivery across all technology manufacturers. Are you the type of person that’s curious why? Here’s an article with more info.

This shortage is partly caused by the current demand for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, that will be End of Life in January 2020.  As we eluded to in the past, we expect these delays to happen quite a bit over the next year as the deadline approaches.

We are urging our clients to start preparing to upgrade their Windows 7 and Server 2008 machines as soon as possible. We want to ensure a smooth upgrade and installation process for any new technology purchases in 2019.

For more information on how this Intel CPU shortage may affect your business, or set up an upgrade plan for 2019, please contact us

Braver Technology Solutions Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary

Braver Technology Solutions, a regional, full-service managed IT services provider, is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Braver Technology Solutions began as an IT consulting company way back in 1989, focused on serving local small businesses. Here are some other equally as awesome things that happened that year:

  • The Simpsons aired its very first episode
  • Nintendo released the Game Boy handheld video game console
  • Batman was the top grossing movie that year
  • Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist, invented the World Wide Web (what a guy!)

Over the past 30 years, the company has grown into a full-service managed service provider serving Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In addition to IT support and help desk support, Braver Technology Solutions offers VOIP communication, disaster recovery, and cybersecurity services.

CEO, Kenny Rounds, remarked: “What, 30 years? No way. Get outta here. We have such an amazing group of clients and teammates that brought us here. Seriously though, I thought I was only like 35 years old. How does this math even work?”

During Kenny Round’s 22-year tenure as CEO, the company has successfully grown ten-fold. This consistent growth is a testament to the company’s commitment to its mission of providing straightforward, simple technology support and the quality of the team that Kenny has built. This team is made up of individuals who represent the Braver Technology Solutions core values of customer focused, dedicated, personable, knowledgeable, and professional.

Since 1989, the company has prided itself on it’s no long-term contract business model. Working with clients through a commitment to professional and personable support, rather than an iron-clad contract, has led to quality and long-term client relationships.

To celebrate this milestone anniversary, the company is planning to hold educational events and promotions throughout 2019.

Why You Need to Prepare For Windows 7 & Windows Server 2008 End Of Life

All good things must come to an end, including the business software that you have likely been using for years. In the tech field, we call this End of Life. This basically means that the developer will no longer issue security updates, fix bugs and flaws, or offer support.

And now its Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008’s turn to head to the big computer graveyard in the sky.

Why is this important?

While technically you can still use your computer after the End of Life deadline, it comes with incredible risk. After the deadline, your computer will be vulnerable to exploits, bugs, and viruses. If you choose to be daring and not update and then find yourself with an issue, you will likely receive no help from Microsoft.

Bottom line: After January 14, 2020 Microsoft will no longer be offering any support or repair services.

What does this mean for your business?

If you are a Windows customer, Extended Support for Windows Server 2008 will be ending January 14, 2020. Extended Support for Windows 7 will also be ending January 14, 2020.

It is important to ensure that your business is protected, which will become more difficult without security updates, higher maintenance costs, and compliance concerns. Braver Technology Solutions support for Windows Server 2008 may not be covered under your Level 1 Priority contract.

From now until January 14, 2020, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 users that require support will be charged a premium from Microsoft for issues and support tickets. Once Extended Support ends, Microsoft will no longer support any issues or tickets for Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7.

Get The Most From Your Section 179 Deduction

If you have been putting off substantial systems or hardware upgrade, 2018 is an excellent year to move forward. This year, small and mid-size businesses can deduct up to $1,000,000 in equipment purchased (including computers and software) using an expanded Section 179 Tax Deduction.

The “Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015” (PATH Act) became law on December 18, 2015. The bill increased the Section 179 deduction limit from $25,000 to $500,000. Since 2015, the deductible has increased year by year, until undergoing major changes in 2018.

With the signing into law of H.R.1, aka, The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2018, the deduction limit has increased to $1,000,000. Additionally, the spending cap on equipment purchases has increased to $2.5 million.

Section 179 Tax Deduction Basics

 2018 Deduction Limit – $1,000,000

  • The equipment must be financed or purchased and put into service between January 1, 2018, and the end of the day on December 21, 2018 to qualify for the tax deduction.

2018 Spending Cap on equipment purchases – $2,500,000

  • This is the maximum amount that can be spent on equipment before the Section 179 Deduction available to your company begins to be reduced on a dollar for dollar basis. This spending cap makes Section 179 a true “small business tax incentive”

2018 Bonus Depreciation – 100%

  • Bonus Depreciation is generally taken after the Section 179 Spending Cap is reached. The Bonus Depreciation is available for both new and used equipment.

The Bottom Line?

To qualify for these deductions, the assets must be purchased and placed in service in the year you are taking the deduction. Please contact us for more information on taking advantage of this tax benefit in 2018.
